Robbie Allen and The Outer Edge play a post-modern
blend of 60s guitar instrumentals, surf, psychedelia,
and alternative rock - custom tailored to suite not
only the musical tastes of fans who favor the
aforementioned genres, but also fans of other types
of music like classic rock, country, and even blues!
The group's style and music exhibits the pure soul of
what it means to rock and roll and entrances its
listeners in the spirit of it all. There are always
wide-eyed looks emanating from those who witness
their unique instrumental prowess. In Robbie's
hands, the electric guitar is a powerful device and
his talents have led many to describe The Outer
Edge as an event that cannot be missed!
INDIVIDUAL MEMBER BIO'S:
Robbie is a multi-talented musician with roots in the kind of music that pioneered a whole generation of guitarists,
namely that of The Ventures and The Shadows. Robbie is good friends with several members of The Ventures to whom he
credits as a major inspiration in the music business. He also currently endorses The Ventures' own guitar company: Wilson
Bros and plays several different models on stage with The Outer Edge. While staying true to his roots in classic surf and rock
instrumentals Robbie, in his original compositions, is not afraid to push the limits of surf. Incorporating modern playing
techniques and psychedelic sounds such as the use of overdrive, fuzz, and wah-wah pedals, albeit tastefully. Occasionally
he'll employ some of the spacey sounds of the mid-60s such as flanging and the "swirling" sounds of a Leslie speaker
cabinet. To watch him perform live is an experience in istelf. Not afraid to showcase his skills, you'll see him following in the
footsteps of his Hendrix-influence, playing behind his head, laying it on the floor, playing it upside down, and even picking out
whole solos with his teeth! Ironically, as a youngster Robbie never even had a desire to perform such theatrics though he was
more than capable. But at the urging of friends and relatives within his inner circle, he started doing it at private parties. When
word of this leaked out others started requesting it at public events and it has since become a mainstay of his act.
Gary Christensen makes a bold statement in The Outer Edge line-up as a very talented drummer, percussionist,
guitarist, and songwriter originally from the San Francisco Bay Area. He spent a good chunk of his time in the state of
Washington performing with musical acts and entertainers in the region, while at the same time honing his skills as a martial
arts expert. He moved back to California where he has resided with his family since the 90s. Gary has been performing as a
professional musician for over three decades. His previous acts have shared the stage with such renowned performers as
Steppenwolfe and Tower of Power, to whom Gary owes much credit for influencing his style and technique. Along with Robbie
and Geoffrey Clegg, Gary is one of the founding members of The Outer Edge. Aside from lending his musical talent to the
group, Gary works very hard behind the scenes as the group's booking agent and keeps the phone wires hot on a daily basis
while keeping the group busy on the road.
Tim Blair is a professional bassist who moved out to California from his home state in Alabama in early 2008. Tim is a
graduate of the Atlanta Institute of Music where he polished his skills on the bass guitar while incorporating basic music
theory and harmony. Tim was contacted by Gary and Robbie to fill-in for two back-to-back shows early in September 2009
after the departure of Geoffrey Clegg. Tim made a strong first impression on the guys when he burned the midnight oil to learn
an impressive number of songs totalling nearly forty in all! Spencer Clark was sitting in on keyboards each night that Tim
performed with the group and he, Robbie, and Gary all agreed that Tim was the man for the job! In which Tim heartily
accepted. Tim is a solid bassist, and provided a strong groove for the backbone of the music while not overpowering or
competing with the lead section, as has been the case in the past. Due to the training he received while attending the Atlanta
Institue of Music, Tim brought a lot of depth and knowledge to the band. Tim decided to move back to his home
state in Alabama and so he performed his last show with Robbie Allen and The Outer Edge on February 19, 2010 in Lodi, CA.
"Sir" William Charles (as he's been dubbed by the other members of the group) is a musician of a decade and a half. Charles started playing guitar in his late teens and used to jam with his friends in various rock groups. As his friends grew older and
started moving away he decided to pick up the keys, simply, because he could dial in an entire rhythm section and have
something to jam along with. Charles had a much harder, overdriven tone than did Spencer Clark and it seemed to lend a spacier, more psychedelic vibe to the sound of The Outer Edge. Charles played with the band from January to June 2010.
Joshua Tucci replaced Geoffrey Clegg on bass in November of 2008. Josh hails from the northern state of Wisconsin. He
moved out to the land of movie stars and "sun, sand, and surf" looking to get into an ecclectic group musicians where he
could stretch out, expanding his style and technique while also exploring his songwriting talent, incorporating diverse styles of
music including jazz, funk, and alternative rock. Josh is a disciple of Les Claypool and Stanley Clarke and had been studying
the band's repertoire for some time as a backp bassist before being offered the job permanently. Josh brings to the rhythm
section his punchy 'lead bass guitar' skills, including string-tapping, and slap/pop methods often associated with R&B and
Funk styles. As an nteresting side note, one of Josh's relatives also works in showbusiness - the well-known actor Stanley
Tucci. You may have seen him in the movie "Big Trouble" with Tim Allen, "Maid In Manhattan" with Jennifer Lopez, "Shall We
Dance" also with Jennifer Lopez, Richard Gere, and Susan Surandon, "The Lucky Number Slevin" with Bruce Willis, Morgan
Freeman, and Lucy Liu, or more recently - "What Just Happened" also with Bruce Willis, Robert De Niro, and Sean Penn. Josh
fell victim to the stagnating economy in the middle of 2009 and had to move back to Wisconsin. He performed his last show
with RA/OE at the Park Chalet in San Francisco, CA before saying good-bye to his bandmates. Josh made quite a mark during
his short time with the band - attending the Winter NAMM Show along with Robbie and Gary, performing with The Outer Edge
as Nokie Edwards' backup band, and performing the bass tracks for the band's first full-length studio effort. Josh also
co-wrote the opening track "Sonar Ghost." Even in his absence, Josh's lingering influence and contributions to RA/OE will be
felt for years to come.
Geoffrey Clegg was there even before there was a beginning. Gary, Robbie, and Geoffrey had played together for awhile
in other projects before deciding to put the band together. After finishing up one of their last projects in June of 2008, Robbie
was looking for musicians to perform with him in his instrumental rock act and Gary had been thinking seriously about leaving
a nostalgic oldies group known as "The Originals" (whom Geoffrey's girlfriend was a member of) and starting a new surf
band. So, naturally, when they formed Robbie Allen and The Sundogs (as Gary dubbed them at the time), Geoffrey was offered
bass duties. Geoffrey is a music business professional that specializes in touring, performing, recording, retail, and
audio/visual engineering. Geoffrey also contributes to the band's sound by providing a very tight, "in-the-pocket" groove and
exhibits excellent stage presence and chemistry with the other members of the band. He brings real attitude to The Outer
Edge's rhythm section,
'...putting the Edge into the Outer...', as he used to say. Geoffrey has been in and out of the band since
its original incarnation in 2008, being replaced by Josh Tucci from October of 2008 to May of 2009, and again by Tim Blair from
September of 2009 to March of 2010. Tucci and Blair both left the group respectively after deciding to move back to their home
states amidst the crunch of the economic crisis in the United States.
Spencer L Clark is a Chicago-born musician with music in his blood. Spencer grew up learning riffs and chords on his
grandmother's piano. While in school Spencer took clarinet lessons. After school one day a classmate (who was learning to
play the saxophone) expressed an interest  in learning the clarinet. Spencer had always wanted to learn to play saxophone so
they traded and Spencer took the school sax home. While in the United States Air Force Spencer traveled throughout much of
Europe, taking his favorite saxophone with him everywhere he went. While in England he was featured on a BBC music
special performing "The Saints Go Marching In" with a group of jazz musicians giving a special performance. Spencer has
also been featured on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Spencer currently resides in Northern California and stays fairly busy
in the music business writing, studying, and performing. He was assimilated into RA/OE as a studio performer in January
2009 and occasionally performed with the group in public. Spencer traveled to Florida during the month of July and slowly
faded out of the band almost entirely before Robbie called and asked him to join the group as a guest musician for the band's
1-Year Anniversary bash in August 2009. Spencer was then back aboard the band as a permanent part-time member but
shortly decided to pursue the path of an ordained minister in December of 2009 and could no longer devote his time to The
Outer Edge. Spencer performed a number of keyboard tracks and contributed two saxophone solos to the group's studio
album "Lost In The Sweep" (released September 2009).
