Robbie Allen and The Outer Edge had the rare privilege of backing a guitar legend and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee on for the second time on June 2, 2010. The Ventures are the #1 selling instrumental rock group of all time and were propelled by their aggressive and modern styles that pushed the electric guitar to the forefront of the early 60s music scene. Nokie Edwards was originally recruited to play bass in 1960 but it was soon discovered that he was a far more skilled guitarist and accomplished musician and was soon thereafter rotated to lead guitar duties. Nokie's smooth, lightning-quick guitar licks and hybrid finger-picking technique allowed him to play more advanced styles that were still all-too-uncommon in early 1960s rock and roll. Nokie retired from The Ventures line-up for a few years between 1968 and 1972 and thereafter stayed with the group until leaving to pursue a solo career in 1984. Nokie worked with many Nashville stars during this hiatus but continued to perform with The Ventures occasionally until the late 1990's when he returned to perform with the group on a more regular basis. The Ventures have been called 'the band that started a thousand bands', and Nokie himself has been nominated for a Grammy Award twice in his career and, along with The Ventures, received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award for The Ventures' music and influence in the 1960s. The Ventures have also been credited with laying the groundwork for what would become the "surf rock" scene a few years after they had emerged with their breakout #2 single "Walk Don't Run." Check out the videos of Robbie Allen and The Outer Edge performing with Nokie below. In the meantime, we hope to have more uploaded over the next few days.
